Not Communication but ‘Communi – Action’ – (Communicate with a Purpose)

Let us look at a case study of how an incentive scheme was used by three different Zone Sales Managers. This particular Life Insurance Company had come up with a short-duration but rather generous incentive scheme for their sales team. The market conditions were tough and the scheme had the potential to be a game changer. The details of the scheme were mailed to the Zone Sales Managers and it was left to them on how would they like [...]

Content is the King? Really?

Another Training?…..Yesssss! I hope it’s the same guys who trained us last time…. How many of us look forward to behavioural trainings organised by our organisation with this enthusiasm…. Let me begin with an example. We say leaders are not born, they are made.  How? Besides many other things, through training also. Of course. When there is not much to choose from the concepts and practices of a leadership workshop, then to choose wisely from the vast repertoire of training available to [...]

Why Don’t We Praise and Appreciate?

After concluding one of my training workshops I was returning home from the Delhi airport. My daughter had also joined me as she too was returning from the same city after concluding one of her professional assignments. We decided to hail an ‘Ola’ cab. The cab arrived promptly; the driver immediately got out of the cab and helped us with our luggage. The cab was clean and well maintained.  The driver showed us his device at the start and then [...]

Catch Them Doing Something Right

While role playing an appraisal scenario, a senior manager questioned the need to give detailed feedback. His exact words were, “The percentages (in terms of appraisal) are already decided beforehand. What’s the point in hashing it out and having a long conversation with the employee? I wrap up my appraisals in 5 minutes.” This gentleman had complained of high attrition in his team at the start of the workshop and articulated his expectations of learning a fool proof way of [...]

Customer Service- Role Reversal

Last evening, my daughter and I went window-shopping  at the local market and of course had to stop at the favourite street side ‘Sev Puri’ stall. We have been visiting this tiny joint for more than a decade. The petite lady selling the ‘Chaat’ is helped by her son who keeps getting fired by her for his street urchin behaviour. We just smile in amusement at every such instance and continue to order our parcels from her. Yesterday, she was [...]

Life As We See It

Life is to short and yet when we are trapped in whirlpool full of pain. We feel the time of bad luck is never ending and we are living through thousand deaths. Hope is something that gets us out of that whirlpool and doubt traps us back into it. We let our fear get overpowering and we let our wisdom get buried beneath a false dark cloud. We want to become an image of our own perfect soul and yet [...]

Remember it is ‘Delegate’ and not merely ‘Task’!

Many a time there is confusion whether we are genuinely delegating or knowingly or unknowingly merely tasking when we thought we were delegating. Tasking is merely asking a person to do what he is already adept at and perhaps has been doing day-in-day-out. This is one of the ‘business-as-usual’ situations; he would perform the tasks, do it effectively and efficiently within the agreed parameters and deliver it to you. He would perhaps not even know his just-concluded piece of the [...]

Appreciation and Spontaneity

A couple of months back, I flagged down an autorickshaw to travel a very short distance. I got in and looked up to the driver to tell my destination but paused for about ten seconds before blurting out my destination. The driver looked different. I suddenly had a flurry of thoughts in my head, but was not ready to speak out any of them. Will I offend the driver? how do I say ? what do I say? I reached [...]
